ABU DHABI - In a lecture at the Center for Information Affairs (CFIA), held under the auspices of the office of Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr James A. Thurber of American University in Washington D.C. said the prominent issues in next year's presidential election in the United States are the Iraq war, the Middle East issue, energy, homeland security, investments, healthcare, education, immigration, economic challenges, housing market and global warming.
Dr Thurber is director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, School of Public Affairs, American University in Washington DC. He pointed out that the American people were split over these issues, indicating that there has been a strong debate on the US war on terror and its results.
Using diagrams and charts, he explained the process of presidential election, its mechanisms and the various stages it goes through.
While stating that the Democrats and the Republicans were currently in the primary stage of the election, which is set to take place on November 4, 2008, he said that Republican Rudy Giuliani and Democrat Hillary Clinton were the most likely candidates to win their parties' nominations.
He expected Senator Hillary Clinton to be the next president of the United States. He indicated that a number of candidates failed to gather support from people due to their support for the war in Iraq, which caused some of them to withdraw from the race.
Dr Thurber stated that there was a strong opposition to the war in Iraq and its huge cost, and noted that none of the candidates had a solution to the problem.
He expected the US troops to stay in Iraq for years, stressing that withdrawal would only make things worse.Dr Thurber pointed out that the US-proposed autumn Middle East conference lacks a clear agenda, and felt that it will not bring any concrete result, given the postures adopted by the parties involved.
