Owners of vehicles that had been impounded in Ajman for more than six months are given only until August 2 to settle their dues and claim their cars, police said on Sunday. Those that will remain unclaimed after the deadline will be auctioned off.
Motorists who would like to check the status of their impounded vehicles may visit the Ajman Police's website www.ajmanpolice.gov.ae or dial 06 7034566.
A top official of the Ajman Police said the latest advisory was released as they aim to clear the space in their impoundment yard, especially because a large number of confiscated vehicles have been kept there for more than half a year. This will also ease the workload of the patrol department staff, he added.
"We are clearing these vehicles as we start implementing the recently launched home impoundment service," the officer said.
In 2019, the Ajman Police recorded a 95 per cent increase in the number of confiscated vehicles, most of which were involved in crime and traffic violations, he explained. The huge spike was also a result of the authorities' efforts in ramping up inspection campaigns.
"These vehicles were driven by motorists who committed serious traffic violations, such as jumping the red light, getting car windows tinted beyond the permissible limit, overtaking from the wrong side, non-renewal of vehicle licence, driving under the influence of alcohol, and so on."
Many of them were caught either by radars or by the police patrols. Authorities vowed to continue raising awareness and ensure road safety in the emirate.
