About 28 inmates of punitive establishments in Ajman have graduated in the last three years. Authorities said they footed the costs involved after the inmates expressed interest in pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees.

Officials at the Ajman Punitive and Reformatory Establishments (APRE) added that 27 inmates converted to Islam during the three-year period.

The inmates were serving time for different crimes.

Brigadier Mubarak Khalfan Al Razi, director of the APRE, said the police partnered with the Humaid Bin Rashid Charitable Foundation to fund the education of the 28 inmates of different nationalities.

The officer said penal institutions have a role to play in reforming inmates so they can lead a decent life when they are released.

The officer hailed the generous support of Sheikha Azza bint Abdullah bint Rashid Al Nuaimi for the initiative.

Several inmates lodged in punitive establishments across the country use their time behind bars to educate themselves or take up various vocational training courses on offer.

Recently, inmates in Dubai punitive institutions took their final Grade 12 exams remotely. The emirate's Inmates Education and Training Department offers specialised programmes and courses for those serving time.

In Abu Dhabi, authorities offer education opportunities and vocational training for inmates. This includes carpentry, sewing, painting and handicrafts, which are aimed at developing the inmates' skills.
