Saif Salem Al Shamsi, Deputy Director of the Ajman Municipality and Planning said the Labour City, covering 60,000 sq metres, would accommodate 20,000 labourers, and the project, awarded to a local contracting company, would be completed within two years.

He said as per the instruction of His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, the labour city, comprising various facilities like medical services and entertainment clubs, would comply with all health, environment and security regulations.

Al Shamsi said the municipality had fined several companies that kept workers in small villas violating their labour rights. He added that the campaign against companies who were providing labourers with accommodation in residential areas would be continued.

Regarding labour camps that are part of factories, he said owners of factories have the right to build labour camps on 35 per cent of the total area of an industrial firm, complying with health rules.

He said companies should adhere to the new labour housing rule and avoid accommodating more than six labourers in a room. He added that companies should not use labour camps as stores and they should appoint cleaning supervisors.

Companies are being given three months' time to abide by health and hygiene rules, Al Shamsi said.
