A young Emirati who was caught driving over the centre island of a roundabout - bulldozing a well-kept patch of greenery with his pick-up truck - learnt his lesson the hard way. He had been asked to do some no-nonsense community service.
The Abu Dhabi Police on Wednesday posted a video on Instagram, showing how the young motorist mindlessly drove the wrong way at the roundabout and forced his way over a neat patch of grass at the centre.
For such a brazen traffic violation, the public prosecution ordered him to serve the community.
In the second half of the video, the man was seen scrubbing the road, digging up earth at the centre island, and planting some greenery that could replace those he had destroyed.
Through the video, the Abu Dhabi Police sought to convey a message: All motorists who break traffic rules shall be punished according to the law.
Violations such as drifting, hiding plate numbers or changing them, modifying vehicles, endangering others' safety or damaging public or private property are punishable by a fine of Dh2,000, 23 traffic points and a 60-day vehicle impoundment.
As seen in the case of the young motorist on the video, community service can also be part of the punishment.
The police urged drivers to avoid dangerous manoeuvres on the road, as irresponsible motorists shall be referred to court.
