The UAE has always been at the forefront when it comes to the rescue and rehabilitation sea turtles and other wildlife. In the past, many projects have taken place in Abu Dhabi, wherein endangered species who often wash up on the shore either due to injury or illness are treated and released back into the ocean after rehabilitation.

Now, going another step forward, one of the largest and most innovative rehab facilities in the region for wildlife is coming up in Abu Dhabi.
According to a Tweet by the Abu Dhabi media office, The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has entered into a five-year agreement with The National Aquarium that will help create one of the most innovative and largest wild sea turtle rehabilitation facilities in the region, as part of the Al Qana waterfront project to protect wildlife and preserve biodiversity in Abu Dhabi.
The objectives of the agreement include awareness programmes aimed at developing educational experiences, research studies and gathering of data. The programme will also encourage internship opportunities for students of biology, ecology and veterinary education.
The National Aquarium will support rehabilitation of sea turtles by providing full veterinary treatment, in-house care and general animal care. The facility will also treat wild animals who have been injured.
Al Qana is an upcoming waterfront development in Abu Dhabi featuring entertainment, dining and leisure. The National Aquarium, which is part of the project, is claimed to be the region's largest aquarium and is set to become a major attraction for visitors.
