Police have urged families to commit themselves to moral values while raising children and keep them away from drugs.
As part of its "Say no to drugs" campaign, the Abu Dhabi Police have warned teenagers against bad friends stressing that they could lead them into drug abuse.
"Parents must follow community child-rearing methods, based on values and traditions that can protect the youngsters from the dangers of drugs. Youngsters must avoid bad groups and reject harmful habits.," said Major-General Fares Khalaf Al Mazroui, Commander-in-Chief of the Abu Dhabi Police.
He added that it is important to monitor children and detect any changes that may occur in a child's behaviour, especially during adolescence. "Families need to constantly communicate with their children. Parents should not hesitate in seeking assistance from authorities concerned if needed," he said.
A smart service was launched last week by the Abu Dhabi Police to help drug addicts. The digital service aims at providing treatment, education and guidance about the dangers of drugs and how addicts can quit the habit.
"Family is the first shield of protection for children from falling prey to addiction. Parents need to create a stable family atmosphere, based on love, understanding and dialogue. They should guide children and find appropriate ways to engage them in positive activities. Instil in children a spirit of giving, creativity and volunteering to serve society and the nation," said Al Al Mazroui.
The police chief also highlighted the efforts being made by the Abu Dhabi Police to adopt the best initiatives and plans to deal with drug abuse, in co-operation with local, regional and international organisations, and provide capable, qualified and efficient human resources to curb drug addiction.
The force said the success of plans and programmes depended upon the co-operation of families and the general public to fight drug abuse.
