This summer, local authorities have planned innovative programmes to make reading fun for children. The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT) will host a virtual summer camp, back-to-school programmes and competitions all to encourage youngsters to explore the magical world of books.
Fatema Al Tmimi, programming lead of DCT Abu Dhabi, underlined that several activities are planned starting today to promote learning in different fields.
The month-long 'Maktba' Summer Camp themed 'Readers in the Jungle' will have special 'meet-ups' for animal lovers and online workshops, including reading sessions, meeting popular authors, reading challenge, magazine-making competition and interactive broadcasts. There will be special workshops on drawing, writing and Arabic calligraphy. The programme will be broadcasted via Microsoft Teams.
"At this summer camp, participants will learn and enjoy their time during the break. Also, we have a back-to-school programme which prepares students for the new academic year. As libraries, we support the community by launching book clubs and movie clubs. We launched competitions to promote different skills like writing."
The DCT will also hold its annual Summer Reading Challenge from July 1 until August 31. In the challenge, participants are required to read a minimum of 30 books. It is open to those between the ages of 6 and 16 years and digital books can be borrowed from the DCT digital library at www.library.dctabudhabi.ae.
