Driver fined Dh10,000 in UAE, to do community service for endangering cop's life

An Al Ain motorist, who was convicted of endangering a cop's life after he tried to hit a police patrol twice and exceeded the acceptable speed limit by 80km/hr, has been fined Dh10,000 and ordered to do community service.
The Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that found the young Emirati man guilty on a number of counts, including driving at a high speed and in a manner that puts the road users' lives at risk, reckless driving, jumping red lights, disobeying a cop and other offences.
Court documents showed that the man was driving recklessly and exceeded the acceptable speed limit by 80km/hr on one of the highways in Al Ain.
When a police officer signalled him to stop, he refused to do so. Police chased him as he continued to commit other traffic offences, including jumping the red signal. The man also tried to hit the police patrol vehicle twice. He was eventually arrested and prosecuted.
Public prosecutors referred the man to court.
The Al Ain Court of First Instance ordered the man to carry out community work for one month apart from paying a fine of Dh17,500. Court also ordered to impound his car. He challenged the ruling at the appellate court which upheld the first court's verdict and sentences.
Unsatisfied with the ruling, the man appealed to Abu Dhabi's top court which maintained the earlier rulings but reduced the fine to Dh10,000.
