Abu Dhabi has seen zero fatalities due to the fog since the introduction of electronic red, blue and yellow alert systems on the highways in 2019, a representative of Abu Dhabi Police said on Tuesday.
In case of poor visibility on the Abu Dhabi highways, police are alerted through these electronic sensors and signboards about it, and then they send out a message to motorists within a 1-2 kilometre radius, warning them to slow down and be cautious.

“The red and blue colours mean that you have to be careful because there is an accident ahead. We try to warn the road users by sending out warning messages like police used to send coronavirus warning messages during the pandemic,” said the representative at the Unmanned Systems Exhibition (UMEX) and Simulation and Training Exhibition (SimTEX) taking place at Abu Dhabi Exhibition Centre.
He said it is mandatory to reduce speed and follow the instructions when the yellow sign is flashing, and there is poor visibility on the highways.
Abu Dhabi has launched a host of initiatives with an aim to achieve a zero road fatality rate in the coming years. It also launched a predictive artificial intelligence (AI) system to achieve the target of no death in road accidents.
He warned that motorists can be fined for not adhering to the rules when these electronic signs flash, and they receive a message warning about an accident and poor visibility during the fog.
“You will get a message like people used to receive during the coronavirus. It's mandatory to follow these instructions for these lights when they are flashing,” said the representative, warning that if motorists don’t follow these instructions, the radar could catch them for speeding.
