Abu Dhabi has issued regulations and penalties for leaving abandoned cars in the emirate in an announcement by the Capital's Department of Municipalities and Transport.

Vehicle owners will be imposed with hefty penalties for leaving their vehicles in public places in a way that distorts general appearance. This includes leaving their vehicles dirty.

The authority has three types of penalties on the basis of the instance of the violation.

  • Motorists will be hit with a Dh500 fine for the first violation.

  • In the case of a second violation, they will receive a Dh1,000 fine.

  • For repeating the same violation a third time, the authority will issue a Dh2,000 fine.

Meanwhile, under Law No. 2 of 2012, the authority also stated penalties for leaving a vehicle's body or frame in public places, which can lead to a distorted public appearance.

  • Vehicle owners will receive a Dh1,000 fine for their first violation.

  • A second violation will lead to a Dh2,000 fine.

  • In the case of repeating the act for a third time, motorists will get a Dh4,000 fine.

Authorities in the emirate have run campaigns in the past and issued warnings to motorists who abandon their vehicles.

With the likelihood of cars being left dirty in public areas increasing in the summer, residents ensure to keep their cars clean and tidy during this period, especially those who go for summer vacations. A Khaleej Times report from 2023 highlighted how residents in different parts of the country were surprised by abandoned car notices after returning from the holidays.

In Dubai, residents will be hit with a Dh500 fine if they leave their vehicle parked in public parking spaces, unwashed for a long period of time. Inspectors are specially allocated with the task of finding abandoned vehicles. Once an unkempt car is identified, a notice is placed on the vehicle's windshield and the owner is given up to 15 days grace period to clean the car, lest it will be impounded by authorities.

Back in 2021, Sharjah Municipality impounded a total of 3,911 'abandoned cars' across the emirate in the first six months of the year alone.
