TODAY MARKS THE final day of Taste of Abu Dhabi, but we couldn't let it pass without one last catch up with a star attraction.
Jose Pizarro is the lauded Spanish chef known for his superb London restaurants. He is currently appearing at Taste's many live demonstrations.
What is the UAE's reputation in international culinary circles?
A really diverse range of cuisines are available, influenced by many different cultures.
Do you think Spanish cuisine is increasing in popularity the world over? What is it about the food that people should love?
I certainly hope so! I've been living in London for over 15 years, and when I first arrived the idea of being able to buy things like chorizo or pimenton in the supermarket or on the high street, was completely alien. Now you can buy these ingredients and more, very easily. Spanish food is about socialising, using wonderful ingredients simply and enjoying them - I think that's something to love.
Would you consider opening a restaurant in the UAE?
Never say never! It would be a fantastic opportunity for me.
Why did you choose London to make your base? What is it about that town that makes it a decent place to open Spanish restaurants?
I knew that there was a yearning for Spanish food in London, which has just grown and grown, and I wanted to be part of it. People in London are really open to trying new things, plus they love to visit Spain and then eat the food at home too.
How do you find events such as Taste of Abu Dhabi? What do they offer to the day-visitor?
I love them! I think they offer a great chance to try new things, see some great chefs on stage and most importantly, have fun! I have tried as much of the food as I can, plus I have got to watch some of my fellow chefs on stage. It's great to be here.
