A total of 79 outlets in Ras Al Khaimah were caught offering expired products, including food items and cosmetic products, according to the RAK Municipality.
The shops were part of the 1,519 food and health establishments that the municipality had inspected throughout December 2018, said Shaimaa Al Tunaiji, acting manager of the Public Health Department.
"Up to 110kg of diverse items, including 62.35kg foods and 48kg cosmetics, were confiscated and destroyed for being expired or unfit for human use," Al Tunaiji said. "No outlet was shut down, but 53 shops were issued warning letters."
The team had carried out 412 round-the-clock inspection campaigns across Ras Al Khaimah in December, she added.
Some outlets in Ras Al Khaimah turn deaf ears to repetitive warnings, said Al Tunaiji. She warned that hefty fines, including the permanent closure of shops, shall be imposed on violators.
"The RAK municipality's inspectors handle with zero tolerance any violation related to people's health. They keep a close eye on all food and health institutions across the emirate," she said. "More inspection campaigns shall be launched to get a better control on the RAK markets."
