294 tonnes of spoilt foods seized by DM

The social control unit of the market management department of the Dubai Municipality seized 294 tonnes of spoiled foodstuffs and arrested 2,266 peddlers and 449 beggars, according to a senior official.
Faisal Al Badawi, head of market management department, said the social control unit inspectors succeeded in uncovering waste and spoiled foodstuffs that were not suitable for consumption. "As many as 33,631 pieces of waste and spoiled items that were not fit for consumption were seized along with 4,486 illegal food items. The inspectors also caught violators who were trying to promote them in workers' accommodation areas in Muhaisnah, Wursan and Jebel Ali."
The inspectors also arrested 2,266 street vendors, 449 beggars, 19 illegal motorists, 35 illegal fishermen from the beginning of 2017 until the end of April 2018. They had conducted 7,800 inspections, achieving an increase of 116 per cent of the target.
According to the report, the period between January and May recorded the highest rate of arrests while the percentage was lower in the remaining months with the lowest in December.
The report also said that the unit received 445 communications from the call centre about violations and this resulted ?in conducting 1,240 sudden ?inspections.
