Both parties have recommended two names each with ruling PML-N favouring justice (Retd) Amir Raza Khan and ex-bureaucrat Khawaja Zaheer while the opposition PPP has chosen Justice (Retd) Zahid Hussain and eminent journalist Najm Sethi.

The committee addressed the media after the meeting and hoped to agree on a name within the deadline by Tuesday failing which the matter would be referred to the Election Commission. Caretaker chief ministers in other three provinces have already assumed office.

PPP spokesman Basra claimed that a consensus has “almost” been struck in the committe on Najm Sethi. The PML-N has described him as a credible and impartial figure.

The only hurdle in clinching the matter is PML-N’s desire to have one of their nominees becoming chief minister. The PPP has succeeded in getting nominees associated with the party in centre and Sindh while all four governors are also partisan.
