Body Brokers. Healthcare run for profit: it’s not an original idea, but what if providers actively target some of the most vulnerable in society and feed their addiction, forcing them to embark on a never-ending cycle of treatment with the bill being picked up by the government and the business pocketing all the money from an endless revenue stream? Somewhat based on true events, Body Brokers tells the tale of rehab centre chain boss Vin (Frank Grillo), hiring a former drug addict, Utah (Jack Kilmer), to recruit current addicts to come use his facilities, all while giving his new residents money to go out and spend ‘as they please’. IMDb gives it 6.2
Chaos Walking. In the not too distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by “the Noise”, a force that puts all their thoughts on display. Uh oh. In this dangerous landscape, Viola’s life is threatened and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets. David Oyelowo also stars in what is an intriguing prospect. There are so far no ratings.
The Mauritanian. More stars than you can shake a stick at, The Mauritanian is a story based on Mohamedou Slahi’s best-selling memoir of his time spent wasting away without trial in Guantanamo Bay. Tahar Rahim delivers a stellar performance as the captive who was only locked up because of association with those who organised the September 11th atrocities in 2001. Human rights lawyer, Jodie Foster, and assistant attorney Shailene Woodley take up his case and discover the government’s covert operations and hush-hush laws allow them to imprison indefinitely with impunity. This cannot stand in The Land Of The Free, or can it? Rotten Tomatoes gives it 72%
Alive. Here’s a dose of horror for the week, Alive is your classic tale of a couple waking up with no memory of how they arrived at their location. While such a premise could apply to any of us after a long haul flight, this duo finds themselves in the hands of a sadistic caretaker who is rather liberal when it comes to dishing out punishments for refusal to obey commands or attempting escape. Finally overpowering their presumed captor, the pair run out only to find the caretaker was actually keeping them safe by holding them in place. What’s outside is far scarier. IMDb gives it 5.4
