New Zealand’s landmark ruling that an obese former South African will have to leave its shores as a result of a strain on its national health scheme will set a precedent for other countries to apply similar restrictions, where “abnormal” ailments will in future be excluded from the customary benefits that claimants enjoy.

Medical scheme administrators may welcome this move, but patients will be quick to invoke their inalienable rights to health care, as contributors to the scheme.

All in all, this could also be an eye-opener for the rotund to go slow on their massive intakes — with obesity a major problem in developing countries — and some airlines applying a double-ticket rule for the bulky.
