A new luxury hotel is set to open at the northernmost place in the world in April 2020, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for adventurous explorers, who can swing the roughly $100,000 price tag for up to five nights' stay.
According to a report in CNN, the North Pole Igloos hotel will be made up of 10 heated domes, which guests can use to sleep in the frozen centre of the Arctic Ocean.
The project is being developed by Luxury Action, an award winning travel company (DMC) in the Arctic & Nordic region.
"The North Pole has been one of the most exclusive travel destinations in the world for years, but no nice and comfortable accommodation facilities exist there," Janne Honkanen, founder of Luxury Action, was quoted by CNN as saying.
"Travellers will sight-see around a glacier during the day, meet indigenous people who live in the polar regions and arctic scientists working nearby, and hopefully catch sightings of seals, polar bears, arctic birds and other wildlife," Honkanen said.
"I wanted to create a more comfortable way to experience the North Pole as it is, by bringing cozy facilities to extreme conditions," he added.
Only around 1,000 explorers make the journey annually, and those who do usually rough it in tents along with the many supplies required to survive the hostile environment, the report said.
The package will include a two-night stay on the island of Svalbard, Norway and one night inside one of the heated igloos. The deal will also include an on-site camp manager, Arctic wilderness guide, chef and security team.
