According to a senior officer here, the motorists were penalised for committing serious mistakes, which entailed black points, while some truck drivers were found not abiding by the traffic rules and regulations.

“As per Article 03 of the traffic law, a driving licence shall be confiscated for three months when a motorist has 24 black points against his name for the first time,” said Lt-Col Saeed Obaid bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at the UAQ Police.

“If the same person again earns 24 black points by violating the law, his/her licence must be suspended for six months. The licence is confiscated for one year when the person earns 24 black points for the third time,” he added.

After the third time, the errant driver needs to pass a training course at an authorised driving school to get back the licence after one year. “In case of temporary licence-holders, their licence shall be suspended for six months if the motorist crosses the 24 black-point limit for the first time.”

“The licence will never be returned until the errant driver clears a training course at an authorised driving school,” Lt-Col Bi Aran said, adding that the licence will be cancelled in case of repetition, and the errant driver may only apply for a new licence a year after cancellation. As many as 1,223 traffic accidents occurred in the emirate in the first five months of this year.
