RTA intensifies crackdown on illegal cabbies
Tired of waiting for a taxi? Be careful of touts — especially if you are new in town — who direct you to private-operators running their own drop-pick business, as there is going to be a crackdown on such illegal activity.
The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has clamped down on the practice of providing illegal passenger transportation on private vehicles within Dubai or from Dubai to other Emirates. At the start of this year, new plans were set in place to tackle this phenomenon said Acting CEO of RTA Public Transport Agency Ahmed Al Hammadi.
For those caught in violation of the law he said punishment will include: “... Impounding vehicles...levying hefty fines from them and repatriating or imprisoning the driver in case of a repeated offence. Moreover, fines will also be imposed on brokers who collect and direct potential riders to private vehicles...”. Shabeer Khan, 34, a retailer in Deira City Centre says he has seen private operators ferrying passengers, but he feels customers aren’t aware that what they are doing is illegal: “Locals already know that you shouldn’t take a private vehicle. It is the tourists who should be informed at the airport of how to abide by RTA regulations.”
Al Hammadi said statistics show that 2,050 offences were reported in 2010 and that number rose to 2,447 the following year. In 2012, the number reached 3,479, a figure which warrants more stringent penalties, he said.
Campaigns are being launched to spread awareness of this illegal activity and Al Hammadi noted the drop in revenues of the transit means approved by the licencing authorities and franchise companies, and the “distortion of the overall and urbanised appearance of the Emirate” as the main cause of this problem.
