About 110 migrants were crowded onto the small boat when panic broke out: Prefecture
The department commenced work on the comprehensive project in 2011 to improve traffic flow and support the infrastructure in Ras Al Akhdar and Al Bateen areas.
The project included the development of two tunnels — Bainunah and Etihad. Consisting of two lanes leading to Sultan bin Zayed Street, the Bainunah Tunnel is 750 metres long and has a height of 6.5 metres.
The tunnel is set to improve traffic flow on Bainunah Street and accommodate higher volume of serving Hazza bin Zayed Street and Sultan bin Zayed Street.
The Etihad Tunnel in Ras Al Akhdar area extends to 240 metres in length with a height of 5.5 metres. The two-lane tunnel leads directly to Etihad Towers.
The tunnel is designed in a “U” shape and decorated with an Islamic pattern, a symbol of the country’s culture and heritage.
The tunnel will improve and complement the public transport network to meet the increasing urban development in Ras Al Akhdar area.
Both state-of-the-art tunnels were designed according to the highest international standards. The tunnels feature a control centre including Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that manage traffic flow, a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for the control of an advanced firefighting system, a storm water drain system and a ventilation system.
The tunnels’ lighting adheres to the highest levels of sustainability and can be automatically adjusted according to the natural lighting intensity.
The project also included expanding a part of Bainunah Street to four lanes, including a dedicated bus lane on both sides to encourage people to use public transport to reach their destinations faster than in private vehicles.
The project also aimed to increase traffic capacity on Corniche Road and Sultan Bin Zayed Street.
In addition, zebra crossings have been marked at all intersections across Bainunah Street and Ras Al Akhdar along with pedestrian walking signals.
While the infrastructure project is completed, the area’s landscaping will finish by the end of the year, the department said.
