The police will deploy patrols on the roads and near schools, Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said.
He added that police patrols will be touring areas around schools from the first day to organise traffic and prevent accidents under the umbrella of the police campaign bearing the theme ‘Schools without accidents’ which aims at reducing accidents, specially in areas that has a large number of schools.
He said that during the campaign, 47 traffic police officers and 28 traffic controllers and six traffic patrols will be on the roads from 6am until the end of school timing to protect students, specially small ones, to reduce congestion at the school gates, to protect the children when they enter or come out of school and prevent accidents, which occur when buses drop children on the other side of road.
He called on parents, who transport their children on their cars to drop them in front of the school gates.
He said that the police would be more flexible with parents, who drop their children at schools, which has no parking areas and they will be allowed to park their cars, but for not more than 10 minutes.
He said that all should cooperate with the police and not obstruct traffic. He said that inspection and control campaign will be conducted on higher secondary schools to catch students who violate traffic laws, especially those who have no driving licence. Al Zafin added that in such cas
es, the police will confiscate the car for one month and issue tickets for reckless student drivers.
He said that some students are driving recklessly and are not giving attention to road users, endangering their life as they commit irresponsible driving in front of schools.
He said that the police put plans to prevent traffic accidents among students and school bus drivers are given awareness lectures not to drop students in mid-road as well as to ensure that the road is free. The traffic police will distribute brochures to parents and to car drivers, and the police will put posters on buses in coordination with transport authorities and education zone to make drivers abide by traffic law and avoid accidents.
He said that the police patrols will be deployed on main roads and also more police patrols will be stationed in front of girls’ schools to prevent any kind of disturbance and harassment by teenagers from other schools.
He also said that the preparation will include the control of traffic movement so that the students will reach their universities and schools on time.
He called on bus drivers to obey the traffic laws while transporting students and not to exceed speed limit and focus on driving, leaving enough spacing and bringing attention to car’s signals to be able to stop at the right time.
