The ‘Park and Ride’ service is aimed at easing traffic congestion and parking problems in the already busy areas of the capital city. In the first phase, the department launched its service in Al Khubairah area of Sector 45, West, where most government departments and private corporate establishments are located.
“The department has allocated 500 parking spaces with a total area of 19,620 square metres marked with ‘Mawaqif’ curbstones painted in turquoise, in addition to signage to direct the employees of large organisations based in Abu Dhabi’s Central Business District (CBD).”
Through this service, DoT aims to transport a large number of employees to their work-places by transport provided by each organisation. Moreover, DoT will provide the companies’ employees with permits to enter and park their vehicles, where ‘Mawaqif’ inspectors will manage and facilitate traffic.
“The service will run from 7am to 7pm from Sunday through Thursday. This service will save from 20 minutes to half an hour from staff time to reach their destination.”
“DoT commenced the ‘Park and Ride’ service at Al Khubairah area, in Sector 45 West, located between Corniche Road North and Fifth Street South and Sixth Street East and Twelve Street West. This service is for government and private sector staff, in a move to reduce congestion, implement sustainable travel options and provide effective car parking solutions,” the department said in a statement on Wednesday.
DoT also said it was part of its Transportation Mobility Management Strategy (TMM) with the main objective of improving the way of travel, making Abu Dhabi an attractive, efficient and healthier place for the public.
The statement further added: “As part of the strategy, DoT will seek inputs from key stakeholders and work with local organisations and businesses to develop transport mobility management plans.
Based on the demand, DoT will study the provision of the ‘Park and Ride’ service for employees in different areas within the city of Abu Dhabi and its suburbs.
“To enhance coordination and integration with government and private sectors, all organisations can sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Transport for the ‘Park and Ride’ service to reduce the use of private cars and encourage the public to use public transportation,” the department announced.
