Motor vehicles should not cross the traffic lights unless their course is clear or to give way to oncoming traffic, in case the traffic lights change, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police stressed.
The move was part of the traffic awareness initiative organised by the Public Relations section in coordination with the Metropolis Traffic Department in the directorate, with the aim of raising traffic education and reducing risks among drivers.
Captain Abdullah H Al Qubaisi, Director of Traffic Discipline Division at the Directorate said stopping in the planned zone where all road directions meet on junctions, poses as a serious risk and endanger drivers’ lives.
He warned motorists of stopping in the yellow box – a traffic offence – and said violators will be liable to be slapped with a fine of Dh500. He also said the Abu Dhabi traffic Department is keen on raising the awareness by curbing violations, which result in traffic bottlenecks and road grids.
Brochures and print outs containing awareness instructions were distributed to the drivers, who are urged to pay attention to the written instructions on the warning signboards being installed on all road junctions with built-in yellow boxes on traffic signals.
Monitoring has also been intensified through the surveillance cameras, as well as the moving traffic patrols which hold over offenders, and take snap shots of all motor vehicles found waiting in the yellow box.
