Work on the Al Humaidiya Bridge on Shaikh Khalifa Road started in March 2011 and Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Works, spoke of its progress: “We have almost 90 per cent of the work complete and the remaining work could be finished before the end of this year or earlier next month.”

He said the project was part of the Dh16 billion dedicated by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to develop the Northern Emirates’ infrastructure.

Residents who have endured traffic disruptions throughout the project were hopeful that their troubles with dangerous turns were behind them, with many hoping for a decrease in traffic congestion following completion of the bridge. “The turns to alternative routes were dangerous and so often I found accidents on these areas,” said Faisal Mohamoud, an Ajman resident who regularly uses the road.

The department is also planning to start another project, paving the Al Nuaimiya Road in the Nuaimiya area, in cooperation with the Ajman Municipality and Directorate of Planning.

The construction works caused a lot of traffic chaos despite the efforts of the traffic police and municipality to ensure alternative routes and detours, but the opening of the bridge should ease congestion in the area.
