17.4% drop in road fatalities

Deaths and injuries due to traffic accidents have dropped in the country during the first nine months of this year, compared to the same period last year, a statistical report released by the Abu Dhabi Police said on Tuesday.

The road deaths came down by 17.4 per cent while the number of injuries reduced by 7.7 per cent. Traffic accidents occurred over the same period also went down by 8.1 per cent, compared to the corresponding period last year.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director-General of the Traffic Coordination Department of the Ministry of Interior, credited the fall in the rate of road fatalities and injuries to the efficacy of the procedures taken by the ministry and to the constant efforts exerted by the police commands and traffic directorates regarding boosting of traffic safety.

According to the figures given by the police statement, a total of 450 people were killed in traffic accidents throughout the past nine months this year compared to 545 deaths killed over the same period last year.
