Major Saif Mohammed Naeef Al Amiri, Director of Traffic Intelligence division in Al Ain, said the campaign carried out from June 10 to 20 resulted in the arrest of 130 motorists, of whom 52 were held for driving recklessly and 78 for getting speed boosters fitted to their vehicles in Mazeed, Al Dhahir, Umm Ghafa, Al Goa, Al Wajan and Zakhir neighborhoods.

Such dangerous manoeuvering annoys people and can also lead to serious traffic accidents in case the driver fails to control the vehicle, said Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate.

According to him, a comprehensive plan had been chalked out to manage what he called the gatherings in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region as part of the summer traffic safety campaign, inlcuding intensified surveillance and deploying civil traffic intelligence patrols, who are provided with cameras to photograph the violators.

He warned young motorists of reckless driving and modifying their vehicles with illegal additions and adjustments to amplify sound and boost speed.

“Inappropriate additions and electric extensions to increase the motor vehicle’s speed raise the risks of fire, especially in case of a car crashing into a solid object. The strong impact, according to him, caused explosion or a short circuit along with the leaking of petrol after the crash .

“The law is strictly enforced against those who drive recklessly, as their motor vehicles or motorbikes will be impounded fort a month, and the offenders will be referred to the Public Prosecution for legal action”, he cautioned.

He urged parents and families to advise their children and not allow other than those who hold driving licence to drive or ride a motorbike, and report any reckless driving by students in front of schools.
