Petrova into Australian Open quarterfinals
MELBOURNE — Nadia Petrova has produced another upset victory to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over No. 3-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova.
French Open champion Kuznetsova committed too many unforced errors in the deciding set and was broken three times after rallying in the second to level the all-Russian match.
Kuznetsova sprayed a forehand wide to give Petrova match point and netted a service return on the next to end it.
No. 19 Petrova had a stunning 6-0, 6-1 win over U.S. Open champion and former No. 1-ranked Kim Clijsters in the third round. Petrova was a quarterfinalist in Australia in 2006 but has never gone beyond that round outside of the French Open, where she lost two semifinals.
