But Wednesday was no ordinary day for the Russian. The qualifier won the biggest match of her life when she stunned compatriot and world number 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova 5-7 7-6 6-4 to enter the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships against all odds.

“I don’t know how I won. I was just playing. I’m still realising that I won,” said the world number 99 who was perhaps more surprised than anyone else with her victory over the two-time Grand Slam winner.

“I mean, it was very interesting to play her because she’s one of the best players and she’s won so many titles. I mean, it really was a great match for me.

“I just I went on the court and I was not thinking about winning or losing that match. I was just thinking about playing my best game, and I was fighting until the end. And that gave me a good success, good result.”

The Switzerland-based player says it was the magic of Dubai that helped her create history on Wednesday. “Maybe, it was the magic of Dubai. Maybe it’s my place,” said Kulikova who had also ITF titles in Dubai.

When she was asked about her quarter-final match against world number nine Agnieszka Radwanska, the Russian replied, “Okay, it’s good that you told me. I didn’t see the draw yet. I didn’t know who I play next match. Now I know.

“Yeah, it depends. I don’t have any special tactics.”

Finally, Regina Kulikova revealed that she plays professional tennis without a sponsor. “No, I don’t have any sponsor, no. My parents help me. Yeah, I had some sponsors when I was a child. They helped me a little bit. But I don’t have really like big sponsors, yeah. Maybe, I will have now.”
