The fourth-seeded Ferrer ousted Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3, 6-2, while the seventh-seeded Monfils beat fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-6 (7).

Ferrer broke Hanescu in the eighth game of the first set and then cruised to victory on the outdoor clay. The two-time finalist will face the winner of the match between No. 6 Jurgen Melzer and the 11th-seeded Albert Montanes.

Monfils, who is playing only his second tournament since recovering from a wrist injury, will face the winner of the match between top-ranked Rafael Nadal and Santiago Giraldo.

Later, Nikolay Davydenko takes on eighth-seeded Nicolas Almagro, and Ivan Dodig tries to follow up his win over third-seeded Robin Soderling by beating Milos Raonic.

Former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero continues his return from surgery against Simone Vagnozzi, while Kei Nishikori of Japan meets Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
