All Five are Deserving Winners: Seles
ABU DHABI — Tennis legend Monica Seles said that all five athletes were equal and it was tough to pick a favourite. Multi-award winners tennis star Roger Federer (four awards), Formula One champion Michael Schumacher (two awards), Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong (two awards), tennis star Serena Williams (two awards) and golfer Tiger Woods (two awards) are on list for the Laureus Athlete of the Decade.
“I’m not trying to sound diplomatic but each one of these athletes deserve to be winners. Each sport has its own character. In the sport I come from, everything is dependent on you, the schedules and the pressure that goes along with it.
In tennis, how do you compare generations. There have been lot of changes like racquet technology. Each sport has its own pressure and it amazing that all these athletes cope with that pressure and still dominate their sport. So, it is impossible to compare these five great athletes. For me, all these champions are equal,” said Seles, a nine-time Grand Slam singles title winner and former world No.1.
