For Huawei, a dual-lens camera system isn't enough to keep it in the lead, so they decided that three would give them the edge - for a couple of years.
The Chinese tech giant launched its newest flagship, the Huawei P20 Pro, in Dubai late on Wednesday, promising better and more intelligent photography.
Dual-lens cameras have been a staple for smartphones as of late, even spilling over into mid-range segments. And while certain manufacturers have yet to embrace the innovation, Huawei is taking it a step further with its Leica-powered triple-lens system.
"This is a breakthrough from our point of view," David Wang, UAE country manager at Huawei Consumer Business Group, told Khaleej Times at the event. "We want [our users] to see more than what the human eye [can see]."
The P20 Pro's camera system - dubbed the 'Leica Triple Camera with Master AI' - comprises lenses with 40MP RGB, 20MP monochrome and 8MP with 3x zoom, a combination that Wang says gives Shenzhen-based Huawei "a 2-year advantage" over its competitors.
"No other brand can catch us in the next 2 years" with this technology, he said, adding that "it's also a good mobile for journalists", touting its low-light capabilities.
As at Thursday, the P20 Pro is No.1 on camera analysis site DxOMark's mobile rating list, with a score of 109, besting the Samsung Galaxy S9+ (third, 99) and Apple iPhone X (97, joint-fifth). Two more Huawei-made smartphones - the P20 and Mate 10 Pro - are in the top 10 at second and joint-fifth, respectively.
Wang says that Huawei, as always, is confident about its products in the UAE despite a crowded smartphone market. He pointed out that in the last quarter, the brand enjoyed a 30 per cent growth in retail.

Survival of the fittest
"We consider the UAE market to be stable," he says. "The country is one of the most unique markets because it is being served by several brands."
Wang believes that the fierce competition in the UAE's smartphone market will bring out the best in manufacturers.
"Better brands will have a better market share," he added. "But this is healthy competition; it helps you to serve consumers better, that's why we welcome that competition. It's better for consumers."
At the same time, Huawei also introduced the high-end Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS, its collaboration with the luxury brand. It also features the triple-lens system.
Pre-orders for both the P20 Pro and Mate RS will begin on April 26, and they will hit UAE shelves from May 3 for Dh2,999 and Dh5,999, respectively.
