The security flaw, which involved SMS messaging, was revealed by a pair of researchers on Thursday at the Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas.

“This morning, less than 24 hours after the demonstration of this exploit, we’ve issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone,” Tom Neumayr, an Apple spokesman, told AFP.

“Contrary to what’s been reported no one has been able to take control of the iPhone to gain access to personal information using this exploit,” he said.

Owners of iPhones will be prompted to download the software update when they next plug their iPhones into a computer.

According to technology news agency CNET, the security flaw involved sending SMS messages that could allow hackers to take control of an iPhone.
