With English as the primary language of instruction, the UAE offers a unique study abroad experience for international students. The country is renowned as one of the most liberal countries in the region, with each emirate -Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah - offering quality education in some of the world's top universities.

Ten universities have been featured in the QS Arab Region University Rankings 2020, while eight appear in the World University Rankings 2021 with Khalifa University of Science and Technology among the highest among universities in the UAE.
You are guaranteed to find a university for whatever subject you wish to study, particularly if you are interested in science, technology or business, where the UAE's education system excels.

For the international student, studying in the UAE comes with an attractive set of opportunities, including the chance to experience renowned tourist attractions, such as the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, being exposed to a multicultural environment as the country is home to many expatriates, the fact that women account for 70 per cent of university graduates, this academically thriving country will provide a memorable study abroad experience.

Here's a guide on how you can apply to UAE-based universities as an international undergraduate student:

Research courses and potential institutions
With an overwhelming number of programmes, students should allocate sufficient time to explore various programmes and courses offered and whether they suit your passion and interests. There are many public and private institutions in the UAE so it's important to check the mode of instruction. The country's official language is Arabic, but most universities teach in English. Also look up the tuition fees and cost of living to see if studying in the UAE is a financially viable option for you.

Check entry requirements and deadlines
Admission requirements and application deadlines vary between institutions, so it is crucial to check their requirements carefully before applying. Visit the university's website and find out what you would need to do to successfully enrol in the university, and contact them if you need clarification. In case English is not your native language, you will need to complete an IELTS or TOEFL test as proof of proficiency. If opting for programmes where the medium of instruction is Arabic, then you will need to show proof of proficiency in the language.

Submit your application
Once you've gone over the details and are confident to have met the requirements, submit your application before the start of the programme. The documents required will vary between institutions, so it is best to contact your university for its full list of entry requirements, but the general checklist features:

.    Completed application form
.    Copy of a valid passport
.    Certificates and transcripts of your academic qualifications (e.g. high school certificate or its equivalent, university transcripts for credit transfer, etc.)
.    Recent coloured passport-sized photo
.    Proof of English proficiency
.    Application fee (typically non-refundable)

Apply for a student visa
This step comes after you receive an offer of admission to a university. You will need a sponsor from a parent or relative in the UAE for your visa application. If you have no relatives there, most universities will do this for you. However, contact your institution to check if they offer this service. A student visa is typically valid for one year and needs to be renewed annually, with an official proof of continuation of study from your university. Recent changes have introduced a five-year student visa for outstanding students with 95 per cent achievement in secondary education and/or a GPA of 3.75. As universities cannot guarantee issuance of a visa, it is important to refer to the terms and conditions listed in each university to understand the process.

Prepare your finances
With two hurdles out of the way, the next step involves determining how much you'll need to pay each semester for your tuition and miscellaneous fees, along with what the deadlines are. Ensure you know the payment methods and take note of additional costs. For example, some universities may charge a fee to students who have made an overpayment and decide to refund the balance while some prices stated may not take into account taxes. If in doubt, contact your institution for clarification.

Prepare to travel to the UAE
Before you hastily pack your bags, book your flight, and bid your friends and family goodbye, take the time to read up on UAE's cultural norms. Islam is the official religion, which plays a big part in the UAE culture and way of life. Thus, be aware of cultural sensitivities. This includes dressing conservatively when in public and avoid scheduling meetings with friends or lecturers during prayer times as courtesy, among others. Never underestimate the value of preparation. When armed with the right knowledge, your study abroad experience can be a smooth one.
