Over the past two decades, the UAE has exemplified a defining trait that sets it apart on the global stage — resilience rooted in visionary governance. Time and again, the nation has met challenges with unity, strength, and unwavering clarity, consistently charting a course that rises above adversity.

When the 2008 global financial crisis disrupted markets and tested financial systems worldwide, the UAE responded not with hesitation but with decisive reform, strengthening regulation, accelerating diversification, and reinforcing investor confidence.

During the 2014–16 oil price downturn, the nation doubled down on its long-term strategy, expanding aviation, tourism, logistics, financial services, and technology. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brought global mobility to a near standstill. International travel paused in a way the modern world had never experienced, yet the UAE emerged as one of the most agile and effective responders globally.

In 2022, as global inflation and supply chain disruptions intensified, the UAE further strengthened its position as a global trade and logistics hub, supported by progressive visa, residency, and digital governance reforms. Today, amid heightened geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty, the nation continues to demonstrate its ability to navigate complexity with strength and resilience.

This, I believe, is only possible because of the UAE’s decades-long commitment to excellence in governance and visionary leadership.

The country’s commitment to harmony, coexistence, diversity, inclusion, and belonging is not episodic, it is foundational. It is something I have experienced personally and see reflected in the more than 200 nationalities who call the UAE home, including over 650 colleagues of more than 45 nationalities within our organisation.

My association with the UAE began more than 30 years ago with Emirates Airline, and over time, I have learned to trust the country’s leadership through even the most challenging periods. This confidence led me to establish VFS Global’s headquarters in the UAE in 2013, from where we manage operations across 167 countries.

The UAE has demonstrated this resilience repeatedly and continues to set a benchmark for how nations can transform challenge into opportunity. As His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,  said: “Challenges are to be confronted, not avoided. By overcoming and learning from them, we transform obstacles into signposts on the path to success.”

These words resonate deeply today. In the UAE, resilience is not just about enduring, it is about rising stronger, adapting with purpose, and turning every challenge into an opportunity.
