Mimi Kakushi Dubai: Where 1920's Osaka comes alive

A Michelin-selected dining destination that blends Japanese tradition, avant-garde artistry and the irresistible rhythm of jazz

Published: Mon 15 Dec 2025, 11:45 AM

Some dining rooms simply impress. Mimi Kakushi transports. From the moment guests enter, the restaurant dissolves the present and reimagines the electricity of 1920s Osaka—a period defined by cultural collision, creative rebellion and the rise of a bold new Japanese modernity. Jazz clubs thrived, avant-garde art movements rejected convention, and the iconic “Moga” modern girls reshaped fashion with sharp silhouettes and unrestrained individuality. It was an era of transformation, and Mimi Kakushi captures that energy with cinematic precision.

Created by RIKAS Group — the team behind La Cantine du Faubourg, Ninive and Twiggy by La Cantine — the restaurant pays homage to Osaka’s modernist Mavo movement, celebrated for its radical spirit and artistic anarchy. The interior design, conceived by Pirajean Lees, translates this philosophy into a richly layered spatial experience. Expressive lighting, tactile materials, intimate corners and carefully choreographed sightlines shape an atmosphere that feels both historic and vividly alive. Every design element moves in rhythm, guiding guests through a world grounded in detail yet brimming with momentum.

A Michelin-selected and Gault&Millau toque-rated establishment, Mimi Kakushi stands as one of Dubai’s most distinctive Japanese dining experiences. What sets it apart is its mastery of duality — Japanese tradition paired with contemporary creativity; subtle refinement paired with bold expression. The menu honours classical technique, yet embraces global nuance, reflecting the same cultural interplay that defined Osaka’s golden age.

Behind the Name

Mimi Kakushi — meaning “covering the ears” was a revolutionary haircut introduced in 1922. This asymmetrical bob, favoured by fashionable modern girls, marked a turning point in Japanese style. It symbolised independence, defiance and a willingness to break from societal expectation. Much like the hairstyle, the restaurant embodies a spirit of reinvention, elegance and cultural freedom.

A Culinary Journey Shaped by Tradition

The cuisine at Mimi Kakushi is crafted as a narrative — familiar yet inventive, rooted in Japan but shaped by the world. Guests begin with hot and cold sharing plates such as sashimi, sushi, tempura and gyoza. Each dish reflects precision, balance and the kitchen’s affinity for contemporary technique. Signature plates like Miso Black Cod, Wagyu Foie Gras Gyoza and premium Kagoshima Wagyu deliver depth and indulgence, while the eclectic dessert selection provides a final flourish.
