College reinforcing its commitment to providing specialised academic pathways that meet the evolving needs of the healthcare and medical rehabilitation sectors

The College of Medical and Health Sciences at Liwa College has announced the launch of two new Bachelor of Science programmes in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, reinforcing its commitment to providing specialised academic pathways that meet the evolving needs of the healthcare and medical rehabilitation sectors. These programmes focus on niche specialisations aimed at enhancing quality of life and supporting patients’ functional and motor recovery.
Professor Maxime Merheb, Dean of the College of Medical and Health Sciences at Liwa College, explained that the Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy focuses on empowering individuals to perform daily activities independently, particularly those facing physical or cognitive challenges, including children from people of determination, stroke survivors and the elderly. He highlighted the vital role of Occupational Therapy in supporting cancer patients throughout and after treatment, helping them regain functional abilities and adapt to physical changes affecting their daily lives and work.
He further noted that occupational therapists work closely with cancer patients to help them manage fatigue and stress, enhance motor and cognitive skills and develop strategies to effectively resume their daily routine. The program integrates medical and behavioral sciences with tailored therapeutic interventions to ensure a holistic approach to patient care. Students will be provided with extensive practical training at over 40 hospitals and rehabilitation centers across the UAE, providing them with a distinctive hands-on learning experience.
Professor Merheb further highlighted: “The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy focuses on restoring musculoskeletal mobility through manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises and advanced treatment methods. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in enhancing athletic performance, aiding athletes in injury recovery, rehabilitating patients following accidents or orthopedic injuries and supporting post-surgical recovery, including knee and hip replacements. The program also addresses chronic conditions such as back and joint pain. Furthermore, the program keeps pace with modern advancements by integrating sports physiotherapy, orthopedic rehabilitation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into treatment planning. This ensures graduates are equipped with the skills needed for diverse national and international career opportunities in hospitals, sports clinics, and rehabilitation centers.”
Professor Merheb also added that both programs offer a comprehensive educational experience, including field training and clinical simulations, where students receive intensive training at affiliated health centers and hospitals, enabling them to effectively manage a wide range of medical conditions. He highlighted that the College of Medical and Health Sciences at Liwa College provides a cutting-edge learning environment with advanced simulation labs and the latest technologies in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.
Additionally, Professor Mohamed Dhiaf, President of Liwa College, emphasised the importance of launching these programmes to support the UAE’s national vision of advancing healthcare and rehabilitation services. He highlighted their role in developing specialised national talents to sustain the healthcare sector and align with the country’s ambitions for an advanced healthcare system.
He also stressed the programmes’ significance in preparing a new generation of professionals capable of making a meaningful impact on the healthcare sector and improving individuals’ quality of life through innovative therapeutic approaches.
