What makes Yakult special? It is a fermented milk drink that contains a specific strain of probiotics that is unique and only found in Yakult. This strain was discovered by Dr Shirota in Japan, in the year 1935. The Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS) is able to withstand strong gastric acids to reach your intestines alive, therefore allowing our body's immunity to become stronger, prevent gastrointestinal diseases, and even help in fighting the occurrence of cancer cells.

Around the world, years of research support the multiple health benefits of probiotics that include LcS. A study performed on some volunteers who were given the strain and their immunological functions were measured. The results have shown an increase in the natural killer (NK) cells which help fight infections and boost our immunity. This increase was observed after three weeks of continuous consumption and remained elevated three weeks post-consumption.

There are three different types of Yakult: Original, Light and Gold. Original contains eight billion live Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota. Light contains the same number of beneficial bacteria as Original, but is 25 per cent lower in calories and has no sugar added. Yakult Gold is a premium version of the iconic Yakult drink. Each bottle of this premium fermented milk drink contains 30 billion Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (approxi­mately four times the number of good bacteria found in Yakult Original and Light) and it's packed with added Vitamin D.
