Cristiano Ronaldo has became the overwhelming favourite to win this year's Fifa best player award after the Real Madrid superstar was named Uefa best player on Thursday.
This was the third Uefa award for the Portugal captain.
Ronaldo was, of course, expected to win this award again after his magnificent goal-scoring exploits that helped Real Madrid win their 12th European title this year.
Ronaldo scored two goals in the 4-1 victory over Juventus in the Champions League final this year.
"There are the same goals every year, to meet the same challenges, win everything if possible, qualify for the World Cup with my national team," said Ronaldo after accepting the award during the draw for the Champions League group stages on Thursday.
"This trophy will give me the motivation to keep working hard, never to give up. I am blessed and delighted to be with Real Madrid."
Now it seems the 32-year-old striker is all set to lift his fifth Ballon d'Or trophy, matching none other than his great rival Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo was used cleverly by Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane last season. For someone who likes to be on the pitch for 90 minutes, it was quite amazing too see him accept Zidane tactical move to rest him in some of the matches in the 2016-2017 season.

 
It was a ploy that worked brilliantly as a well-rested Ronaldo was in complete command towards the later stages of the La Liga and Champions League campaigns, scoring vital goals.
The Messi vs Ronaldo debate divided the globe over the years. Messi did enjoy a highly successful campaign last season for Barcelona, scoring 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions. 
Ronaldo, on the other hand, played 46 games and scored 42 goals in all competitions. But his goals came in decisive moments in big matches, giving Real Madrid two major titles.
The 30-year-old Messi won only the Kings Cup with Barcelona in what was a disappointing campaign for the club.
Messi scored more, but Ronaldo scored when it mattered most. 
Well, the Messi vs Ronaldo battle is always a tough one to pick. 
In the last two seasons though, Ronaldo has enjoyed the upper hand.
