The UAE U-15 national team may have qualified for the AFC U-16 Championship finals to be held in India 2016 but they achieved their goal under trying circumstances.
According to a statement from the UAE Football Association, prior to their last match against Saudi Arabia, the UAE delegation suffered an unpleasant incident, when one of the rooms in which the players were staying, caught fire. The incident occurred in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The fire broke out at 3am due to a short circuit in the air conditioning. Luckily a player alerted the rest of the team members and the entire floor was evacuated with no casualties.
But as a result of this the players were forced to remain awake for more than three hours before the hotel's management could accommodate all of them into other rooms.
Despite the horrific event the boys decided to play the match on time and do their best, but it was not good enough as lack of sleep and weariness showed in their performance as they went down tamely to Saudi Arabia 6-2 in the second and final round of the qualifiers.
Earlier, UAE beat Group D hosts Bangladesh 6-1 on Friday. The group was reduced to three sides after Pakistan pulled out from the qualifiers.
According to the rules of the competition, the top eleven teams of the 11 groups advance directly to the finals with the four best-placed seconds teams.
