It would have been amazing to have a glimpse of history maker Thunder Snow and see the double Dubai World Cup champion go up against other contenders at the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes in Saratoga, US. But it was not to be.
The five-year-old son of Helmet, who rewrote history by winning the richest horse race in the world in successive years, was laid low by fever prior to the contest run over a mile and a furlong.
With Thunder Snow, who has had wins and placings in 12 Group 1/Grade 1 races in France, Ireland, UAE, UK and the US, not up to it, his connections Godolphin decided not to run him.
Thunder Snow was scratched from the race at the Saratoga Racecourse, which was eventually won by McKinzie, trained by Hall of Famer and three-time Dubai World Cup winner Bob Baffert.
"We took Thunder Snow to the track this morning and he came back to the barn and coughed a few times," Thunder Snow's trainer Saeed bin Suroor said.
"We took his temperature and he is running a little bit of a fever. In the best interests of the horse, we will be passing on the Whitney," the Emirati added.
