IPL Article

Even as no cricket fans are allowed inside the stadiums due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the 2020 IPL commenced in the UAE with thunderous roars of the virtual audience that recreated the frenzied IPL atmosphere on the first match on Saturday.
This is only the second time the IPL is being played outside India after its 2009 tournament in South Africa. The tournament was initially scheduled to commence on March 29, 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic.
Matches will be played in three cities in the UAE - Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, while the final match will be played on November 10, 2020.

What is IPL?
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India. The Indian Cricket League (ICL) was founded in 2007. There are eight teams which represent eight cities in India, namely:

Mumbai Indians
Chennai Super Kings
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Kolkata Knight Riders
Delhi Capitals
Kings XI Punjab
Sunrises Hyderabad
Rajasthan Royals

How many players are in an IPL team?
There are 25 players in a team, the team captains have to submit a list of 11 players and four substitute fielders to the match referee before the toss or the game begins.

Why is the IPL so popular?
The IPL is the most-attended cricket league globally and ranks sixth among all sports leagues. The IPL was the first sporting event in the world to be broadcasted live on Youtube. According to BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed 11.5 million to the GDP in India. In 2016, the IPL was one of the most viewed events globally, with over 100 million viewers. The IPL has also become an excellent platform for brands to market their products.
One of the reasons it is so popular is because it closely connected to Bollywood, whether it be team ownership or close relationships. Also, the strategic time out concept and three-hour matches allow viewers to take a break without missing any of the action.

What is the new schedule for IPL 2020?
There are a total of 60 matches scheduled to be played in the 2020 IPL, there as many as ten double-headers (two different games being played on the same day).
Afternoon games are scheduled to commence at 15:30 IST and evening games are scheduled to begin at 19:30 IST. In previous years IPL evening games started at 20:00 IST; however, this year the matches are expected to start 30 minutes earlier.
The final match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. This is the first time that a final game will be played on a weekday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has carefully considered the time frame between matches as well as the bio-secure environment.

What are bio-secure bubbles?
Bio-secure bubbles will be implemented for IPL 2020 in order to contain the spread of Covid-19. This means that the movement of everyone who is engaged in the tournament, including the players, support staff and match officials, will be limited.
The BCCI has arranged different hotels for each franchise, and all players have to follow social distancing rules in their respective dressing rooms.
Cricketers will not be permitted to visit family or friends outside the team's bio-secure environment. All protocols and rules will apply to the player's family, e.g. limit themselves in a bio-secure bubble.
In an official statement released by the BCCI: "Anyone who breaches bio-secure protocols will have to self-isolate for seven days and return two negative tests on days 6 and 7".
England bowler Jofra Archer was dropped from the second Test because he breached bio-security protocols by stopping at his flat while en route to a venue. Pakistan's Mohammed Hafeez broke the bubble by interacting with a family member outside the bubble and was asked to self-isolated for five days.

Will fans be allowed to attend matches at the stadiums?
At the initial stage of IPL 2020, both the BCCI and the UAE government have advised that no fans will attend matches. However, at a later stage, the government may allow a limited number of people to attend matches with proper social distancing measures in place.

What is the BCCI Covid-19 testing protocols for IPL 2020?
According to the BCCI rules for Covid-19 tests and results, every player and support staff has to test negative as many as five times before training commences in the UAE camps. Each Covid-19 Test will be conducted on every fifth-day.
Should there be a positive Covid-19 test result, a 14-day quarantine period is mandatory.
The BCCI is spending an estimate of $1.4 Million on Covid-19 tests during the IPL 2020. All players have to undergo a Covid-19 RT-PCR Test twice before flying to the UAE. After that, they undergo a 14-day quarantine after arriving in the UAE. During this period three Covid-19 tests will be conducted. Players and support staff can only enter the bio-secure bubble with their respective team once they have tested negative for Covid-19.
Some teams have taken the responsibility of ensuring their players' health by taking preventative measures. Mumbai Indians have opted for the "Smart Ring" tracking device to monitor their players' health.

Basics of cricket
Cricket is played with two teams of 11 players each. Each team takes turns batting and playing the field. The batter is a batsman and the pitcher is a bowler. The bowler tries to knock down the bail of the wicket. A batsman prevents the bowler from hitting the wicket by hitting the ball.

Two batsmen are on the pitch at the same time. A game begins with the team captains flipping a coin to see which side will bat first. The winner of the toss can elect to bat first or to take the field first.

Types of Matches
There are main types of cricket matches that are played on a professional level.
Test match: A test match can last up to five days. Both teams will go through their batting lineup twice for a total of four innings.
One-day match: Each team bats once with 50 overs each. This type of match only lasts a day.
Twenty20: Each team only faces 20 overs and the match lasts approximately three hours.

Batting
The striker will be taking pitches from the bowler while the other batsmen, the non-striker, will be at the other end of the pitch. The remainder of the team will wait off the field for their turn to bat.

Bowls will be delivered to the striker in an attempt to get them out. When this happens, they are replaced by another batsmen.

Bowling
The bowler is the one who bowls the ball to the batsman.
The fielding team will disperse around the field to positions designed to either stop runs from being scored or to get the batsmen out. The bowler will take the ball and bowl it to a batsman at the wicket (stumps in the ground that designate where the batsman should be).

The goal of the bowler will be to prevent runs from being scored by getting the batsman out. This is referred to as a dismissal in cricket.
When one bowler has delivered six balls, it is called an over.

Basic cricket terms:
Innings: The duration it takes for a team to bat. A test match has four innings with each team coming up to bat twice.
Wicket: This refers to the three stumps at the end of a pitch. A batsman will bat in front of the wicket to protect it. Their goal is to prevent the ball from hitting the wicket.
Run: Scoring in cricket.
Dismissal: This refers to the end of a batman's batting period.
Scoring in Cricket
Here are the main methods to score a run-in cricket.
Single: A run is scored if they make it to the opposing side; both batsmen must be aware of when this can be done on the field. Double or triple singles are possible as well.
Boundary: When a batsman hits the ball to the field's perimeter, their team is awarded six runs. There is no need to run in a boundary hit.
Extras: These refer to points awarded from penalties that are done by the fielding team. This happens when a bowler delivers a wide (an illegal delivery that is too high or wide) or no-ball.

Scoring
The batsmen can run between the wickets after the ball is hit. A run is scored each time they change places on the pitch. The team with the highest number of runs (typically in the hundreds) wins the match.
6: A ball hit out of the field on a fly.
4: A ball hit out of the field on a bounce.
Bowled out: Bowler knocks over the wicket with a bowl.
Caught out: Fielder catches a batted ball on the fly
Runout: Fielder catches the ground ball and throws it at the wicket, knocking it down before the batsman gets there.
Leg before wicket: Batsman's body interferes with a bowled ball that would hit the wicket.

Cricket ball
The core is built with string, has raised seams and the circumference is approximately 9 inches.
Cricket bat
The bat is made of wood, with a maximum width of 4.25 inches and a maximum length of 38 inches.

Popular cricket terms:
Bumper or bouncer: A short-pitched ball targeted at head height.
Bunny: Lower order batsman who is easy to dismiss.
Dibbly-dobbly: A medium to the slow-moving bowler.
Googly or Wrong'un: A ball from the leg spinner which spins the other way.
Howzat: What fielders yell when they are appealing for a wicket.
Jaffa: Unplayable ball.
No Ball: Illegal delivery which adds one run in the batting teams favor
Quack or Duck: When a batsman is dismissed without scoring.
Ramp: When the ball is intentionally guided over the top of the wicket keeper and slips from fast-paced bowling.
Waft: An unconvincing shot where the batsman waves the bat at the ball without making contact.
Yorker: A full pitched ball aimed at the batsman's toes or on the crease line.
Zooter: A leg-spin delivery which skids through low and quick
