The UAE batsmen found Haseeb Amjad and Nadeem Ahmed too hot to handle as the hosts crashed to a 276-run defeat against Hong Kong in the four-day International Cricket Council (ICC) Intercontinental Cup match at the ICC Academy ground on Saturday.
Paceman Amjad and slow left-arm spinner Ahmed grabbed eight wickets between them to shoot UAE out for 105 chasing 377 runs for victory on the fourth and final day, and securing Hong Kong's first win in the Intercontinental Cup.
The victory helped Hong Kong to clinch a maximum of 20 points from this second-round encounter and climb to the third slot in the table after two rounds. On the other hand UAE have suffered two successive defeats to slip to the last position with no points in the eight-nation competition.
UAE had ended the third day on 5 for no loss, having played out three overs after being set a target of 382 for victory.
The hosts were jolted at the very start of the day as they lost a wicket on the very first ball of the day, bowled by Haseeb, when Amjad Ali was trapped leg before for 1. Haseeb followed it with another success the very next ball, bowling out Usman Mushtaq for a first-ball duck.
From thereon it was all Hong Kong's show as UAE lost wickets at regular intervals. So dominating was Hong Kong bowlers that nine UAE batsmen had only single-digit scores to their names.
