The Northern Irish star pulled out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday after experiencing a sharp twinge in his back during a routine gym warm-up. The issue escalated into lower back spasms on the practice range, forcing McIlroy into his first mid-tournament withdrawal on the PGA Tour since 2013.

Despite the setback, McIlroy has expressed confidence in his ability to compete. Returning home to South Florida for intensive physiotherapy, he emphasised that the withdrawal was purely precautionary.
“I wanted to make sure I could handle four rounds at TPC Sawgrass,” he said, underscoring his commitment to defending the title he captured in dramatic fashion last year.
McIlroy’s 2025 triumph at the Players Championship came after a thrilling Monday playoff against J.J. Spaun, clinching victory on the third extra hole following heavy rains that delayed the weekend conclusion.
A repeat performance would place him in rare company: only Scottie Scheffler has successfully defended the tournament in its 52-year history. McIlroy already boasts multiple Players titles, having lifted the trophy in 2019 and 2025, further cementing his legacy at the famed Florida course.
