Resilient and Dubai-rooted Tommy Fleetwood seals career-defining FedEx Cup victory
After 163 PGA Tour Starts, countless close calls the 34-year-old English golfer's resilience finally pays off in the U.S.

Tommy Fleetwood has always been regarded as golf’s Mr. Nice Guy. Loved by fans and respected by his peers, the Dubai-based star finally shook off the tag of ‘best player without a PGA TOUR win’ after capturing the coveted FedEx Cup at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sunday.
The long-haired Englishman from Merseyside, England, a town made famous by The Beatles and Premier Division football giants Liverpool and Everton FC, sealed victory with a composed 2-under 68 to finish at 262 (-18) for the week, He completed three shots clear of nearest challengers and American duo, Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley, who both closed at -15.

The victory, his first in the United States after years of near misses, drew an outpouring of tributes from the golfing world. From Tiger Woods to Justin Rose, golfers united in praising Fleetwood’s resilience and unshakable determination.
Fleetwood, 34, had won eight times worldwide, including some of the DP World Tour’s most prestigious titles, but a U.S. success had remained elusive.
Unbroken spirit
That void grew more painful this season after agonising near misses, including the Travellers Championship in June and the FedEx St. Jude Championship earlier this month, where he faltered in the final rounds despite being in winning positions. Each miss tested his character, yet each time, he responded with a never-say-die attitude.
“Like any normal person, I get disappointed, I get sad, I get angry,” Fleetwood said earlier this week. “But at the same time, I think I have a good awareness that there’s no point in making things a negative experience. You have to learn from everything and try to do the best you can.”
It is this spirit of resilience that carried him through the Tour Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA Tour that also serves as the culmination of the FedExCup Playoffs.
Composure under pressure
Starting the final round with a narrow lead, Fleetwood produced a composed performance under pressure. Birdies at the sixth, seventh, 12th, and 13th holes offset early hiccups before he arrived at the 18th to the accompaniment of fans chanting his name. Adoration well deserved for someone who has never believed in giving up..
“The door was getting further and further open for me as the round went on,” Fleetwood said at East Lake. “It’s just always been in my mind, I’ve been a PGA Tour winner for a long time. It feels so special to finally say it out loud.”
The victory resonated in Dubai, where Fleetwood has made his family home and has fully embraced the Emirate’s growing golfing scene.
He is also an ambassador for DP World and created his Tommy Fleetwood Academy at Jumeirah Golf Estates, where he has mentored young players and passionately invested in grassroots golf.
UAE cheers Fleetwood’s triumph
For UAE fans, his FedEx Cup success is as much a triumph for Fleetwood as it is for them.
Fleetwood’s story has always been one of resilience. His 30 top-fives and 44 top-10 finishes before this maiden PGA Tour victory are the most by any player in over four decades. Yet instead of succumbing to frustration, he reminded himself to stay positive and give it his best.
“He keeps getting knocked down and keeps getting back up and coming back stronger,” Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry said. “Nobody deserves this more.”
For the “Mr. Nice Guy” of golf, the sweetest reward has finally arrived. Fleetwood, who earned $10 million for his efforts, is currently ranked 6th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) .
