Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has swapped packed football stadiums for pristine golf fairways, and he’s loving every minute.
Now based in Dubai and gearing up for the inaugural Stars Golf League, Yorke is set to tee off alongside some of the world’s greatest sporting stars in one of golf’s most thrilling new formats.
The Trinidadian football legend knows a thing or two about performing under pressure in some of football’s most famous cauldrons like Old Trafford, Camp Nou and San Siro., having built his career on delivering when it mattered most.
These days, a lot has changed. The roar of the crowd has mellowed and has been replaced by the sound of a well-struck iron shot and the gentle roll of a birdie putt.

Post-retirement, Yorke has discovered a genuine new passion in golf, and has spent much of his time in Dubai, refining his game at Dubai Creek Resort, a venue he now calls home. That passion has led him to an exciting new chapter: a starring role in the Stars Golf League (SGL), a bold, franchise-based, six-team tournament launching at The Els Club Dubai from March 25 to 28, with a $1 million prize purse up for grabs.
Yorke will line up alongside an eye-catching cast that includes Ryan Giggs, his former Manchester United teammate, Ruud Gullit, Netherlands’ most iconic footballer, golfing royalty Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie, and cricket greats AB de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh.
The Stars Golf League is unlike anything golf has seen before. It blends legends of different sports, top women professionals, and global sports icons into a team-format competition designed to bring fans closer to the action than ever.
For Yorke, that mix is exactly what makes it special. Asked what he’s most looking forward to with golfers, footballers, cricketers, and celebrities all teeing it up together, Yorke responded immediately,
“I’m really looking forward to the camaraderie and the competitiveness between the ex-players,” said the Trinidadian. “ It’s always nice to challenge yourself and see if you can come out on top. The Stars Golf League is a great occasion, and I look forward to being part of it.”
Despite his easygoing confidence, Yorke takes his golf seriously.
“Obviously, golf is something that I love now,” he explains. “I feel very confident in what I do. I’ve worked extremely hard on my golf, and I feel very comfortable playing. I’d still like to hit it like the pros, but I believe I have a game that can ensure I can compete with the rest of the field.”
That competitive instinct, forged at the very highest level of football, remains as sharp as ever. Yorke also relishes stepping outside his comfort zone, as he recently did when playing in the Pro-Am at the prestigious Dubai Invitational in Dubai.
“Football will always be my number one sport,” he admits. “But having the opportunity to play with these pros, Rory (McIlroy), Shane (Lowry), Tommy (Fleetwood), and a few of the others, was a great experience. Being part of DP World Tour events here at the Creek, like the Dubai Invitational, has been fantastic.”
Now, with the Stars Golf League approaching, Yorke’s journey comes full circle. From global football icon to passionate golfer, he’s set to tee off at The Els Club alongside sporting legends in a tournament that breaks the mold of traditional tours.
