No spectators, strict hygiene requirements and lower prize money: If the start boxes for the spring meeting on the racecourse in Iffezheim open on Saturday, everything will be different than usual. "However, we are pleased to make an important contribution to the continued existence of gallop in Germany afford, "said Baden Racing Managing Director Jutta Hofmeister.
The traditional event was shortened to two days due to the corona crisis, with twelve races taking place just outside Baden-Baden on Saturday and Sunday. "It will be a financial effort for us because we offer four group races on the two days," said Hofmeister. Despite the cut, they already account for half of the 230,000 euros in prize money.
The gallopers have been holding races regularly since May 7th. The betting turnover after the Corona mandatory break is good. However, the lack of entry fees and uncertainties among many sponsors pose a major challenge to the sport.
The spring meeting, which has been held since 1972, is now supposed to be the next step back to normal - despite the unusual circumstances. The owners of the horses are also not allowed. "We are ready and prepared for everything. All safety precautions have been taken," said Hofmeister.
