Former world champion Peter Gade of Denmark started off the training activities at Dubai International School (DIS) in Al Quoz a season ago, and today, a year after that memorable startup programme, the institution is an example of how grassroot sports can be promoted from scratch.
Fresh batches of DIS-Al Quoz students are now going through their third week of an initiation cum training programme as a Shuttle Time Dubai Local Training Centre, where over 60 girls and boys practise their skills as they prepare for the second Shuttle Time Dubai Schools Championships later this month.
The incentives are many for the young ones to pick up the sport, one being the fact that teams who qualify for the Championship finals will get the chance to meet one of India's star players, current world number five Kidambi Srikanth.
Srikanth, 22, thrilled spectators during last year's Dubai World Superseries Finals when he made it to the semifinals before being defeated by eventual champion Chen Long, and cemented his emerging star status when he won the Yonex Sunrise India Open in March this year.
