World Number 8, David Ferrer, has been confirmed for the landmark eighth year of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC).
The Spaniard, who recently secured his milestone 25th ATP World Tour title at the Malaysian Open, will battle it out in a star-studded showdown in Abu Dhabi from December 31, 2015, until January 2, 2016, at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest returners in tennis, Ferrer's last run out at the UAE tournament saw him finish runner-up in the final. This year the Spanish legend has his eye on taking victory and ousting confirmed competitors: former world number 1 Rafael Nadal and Canadian superstar Milos Raonic. Ferrer will have to be at his best to lift the trophy in what is sure to be another classic installment of the season-opening Mubadala World Tennis Championship.
Ferrer comes into his fifth year at the Abu Dhabi tournament following a successful start to 2015, securing a 22nd ATP World Tour title in Qatar. He then went on to secure back-to-back wins in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Acapulco, Mexico. Most recently Ferrer was crowned champion at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, bagging his quarter century of ATP World Tour titles as he became the first Spaniard to win the Malaysian Open, doing so in straight sets. Following his milestone wins in 2015, the agile Spaniard will be looking to get his 2016 season off to a flyer in Abu Dhabi, testing himself against fellow top stars.
Commenting on his return to the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, David Ferrer said: "It is always such a pleasure to come and play this tournament, there is always a lot of excitement in the crowd and the set-up in Abu Dhabi is world class. I am excited to get the season underway. The players are always very strong so I know exactly what I can expect this year: tough, fast and exciting tennis. I know Rafa and Milos will set the standards very high and it's certainly looking like one of the most competitive tournaments yet. In front of the packed stadium in Abu Dhabi with an excited atmosphere, it's going to be great for the fans and the players."
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship is entering its eighth year and with three of the world's top ten players already announced to play, the tournament boasts a thrilling line up of elite talent. A unique combination of a 'winner-takes-all' prize of US $250,000 and a championship format paves the way for the world's best players to battle it out in this ruthless championship that will serve up action-packed thrills from the first point to the last.
