Zimbabwe in upset win over Argentina
DUBAI - Zimbabwe pulled off the first shock of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens with a surprise 24-14 result against Argentina in Pool B on Thursday morning.
Tries by Njabula Ndlovu and Wensley Mbanje gave the African nation an early 10-0 lead, with Tangai Nemadire’s subsequent conversion stretching that to 12-0.
The South Americans then got on the board, with Martin Miguel Nunez Lasalle’s score and a Joaquin Todeschini conversion bringing it back to a five-point game.
Zimbabwe were not to be denied a healthy interval advantage however when Nemadire dotted down for an unconverted try and, more importantly, 17-7 at the break.
Argentina came to within three points of parity as Lasalle’s legs and Todeschini’s foot took their team to 14 upon the resumption of play.
Three blue and white substitutions were duly made in an effort to finally catch, and surpass, their spirited opponents.
Zimbabwe clearly didn’t read the script and Mbanje scored his second to stun the more-fancied Argentines, who will have been stunned to lose following Nemadire’s successful conversion thereafter.
Zimbabwe’s heroics were replicated by European minnows Portugal at lunchtime, when they somehow managed to topple England in Pool D.
Frederico Oliveira and Pedro Leal did the damage with two scores and two conversions respectively, while England could only muster Mat Turner and James Rodwell scores in reply. Ben Gollings also slotted over two points in a narrow reverse.
